And you can furnish an entire house with what’s on sale today and Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday at the Yuba County Library, in Marysville.  It’s the spring book sale put on by the Friends of the Library, and all proceeds go to Library programs and facilities. The Library has some great children’s programs planned for this Summer, and they are made possible in part by the money collected at the book sale.

Bring a bag of your old books to donate and then fill it back up with amazing bargains. Hardcovers are only a buck and trade paperbacks are only fifty cents.

By the way, if you are a big fan of those romance novels, have they got a treasure trove for you.  Literally hundreds and hundreds of bodice-ripper paperbacks are on sale for only 25 cents each.

Today’s sale is open until 4 pm, so hurry on down to the library and get your read on.

Everybody loves the Sunday papers.  The funnies in color, plenty of coupons, the week in review in case you weren’t paying attention lately, the Sunday “magazines,” the extra opinion pages.  I get three Sunday papers — the Appeal-Democrat, the Bee and the NY Times — but, you know what?  I like the Monday A-D just as much; it’s got the rundown of events for the week, and I do sit there and circle stuff I want to do.  I don’t always get to do them all, but I try to support as many of the local car wash fundraisers, rummage, plant and bake sales, street fairs, and other citizen-created events.  I love seeing all the folks working together on their project. (And they’re just plain fun.) It’s one of the aspects of life around here that defines it for me and drew me here in the first place.  I went to a few events this past weekend (the St. Isidore’s Rummage Sale, the Harvest Moon craft fair at Stephens Farmhouse, and the Farmer’s Market, as always), and I already have a few on my calendar for next weekend and beyond:

 – the Yuba County Senior Center Rummage sale on October 4
– the Sutter Buttes Canine Rescue Parking Lot sale also on Oct 4
– the Columbus Day 50% sale at the Goodwill in YC
– the Friends of the Yuba County Library Book Sale in Marysville October 25-29

If you are reading this on Saturday, you should be over at the spring book sale at the Yuba County Library, organized by the Friends of the Yuba County Library.  I was helping set up yesterday and I can tell you that there are LOADS of wonderful books. Except for a few exceptional volumes priced at $3, you can get any hardcover for just a buck, trade paperbacks (some look brand new!) for 50 cents and pocket-size paperbacks for a mere two bits.  All the proceeds go to supporting the Library’s many wonderful programs.

On the other hand, if you are reading this on Sunday, you have two more bites at the apple of knowledge: the book sale continues on Monday and Tuesday.  Be there or be square.  I am sure you know where the Library is, but just in case — it’s in historic downtown Marysville at C and 3.

Sunday I stepped back into the past at the fifth annual Women’s History Tea at the Yuba County Library.  Organized by the library and its Friends, the event’s $10 tickets raised money to help the library continue its many excellent programs, and was a fair price to pay for the wonderful history lessons we got.  Each table was hosted by a different historical figure (played by Friends and volunteers) — from first lady Eleanor Roosevelt to first American female architect Julia Morgan (who built several homes and public buildings in Marysville) — with teacups and decorations to match the person and the era.  Photographer Dorothea Lange was there, acting as a genial emcee, along with Rosie the Riveter, Mother Jones, and even Princess Di.  I sat with Ellen Clark Sargeant, suffragette and wife of Aaron, the U.S. Senator from Nevada City who wrote the Constitutional amendment that gave women the right to vote. Of course, it took 40 years for the 19th amendment to pass. (And more than twice as many more for us to have a woman be a serious contender for the presidency.)  So, ladies, don’t take the vote lightly!  Well, that applies to gentlemen, too!

When I finally got to Marysville two of the first things I did was to get a library card and update my voter registration.  There’s another election in June and then the biggie November 4.  If you’re not registered, put it on your to do list.

Then bop on over to our library, check out the very special California Room, chock full of local history, and while you’re there, consider joining The Friends.  It’s just five bucks a year! Or as Len La Barth would most likely calculate it: just 1.75 lattes
